The discovery was not altogether unexpected.

I have often entered the summer squash forest,
sometimes seemingly lost for weeks at a time.
It is cooler there, under the shade of the
towering scalloped canopy, and moist.

The ground is soft and covered in leaf litter,
empty tubular stems broken and lying about.
It is noisy there, around the sound of the
buzzing caretaker creatures, and close.

A place of danger for those who wander farther,
perfect spherical pod arrays biding their time.
They will hatch there, emerging in droves like
orcs from Middle Earth, and swarm.

The dirigible was wedged tightly in the branches,
brought quickly to earth in emergency landing.
We search there, hoping to find survivors
Brown and Trump among debris, and fail.

Turns out, it was just an over-grown zucchini.
